If we want to try a different interior style, something like this could be cool.

Beginning story boards
1st image: antena of car moving along barren landscape with bits of snow flying in the air
2nd image: Car plowing through snow
3rd image: car pulls up to house
4th: gets out of car
5th (not shown): black screen and a thud
6th image: camera pulls out a bit and the guy stands up in the doorway leaving the box
Hey guys, I made a new animatic based off of the discussions we had the other day.
I didn't come up with an ending as to how the clap sound is made, and the visual development of the interior is just roughed out at this point. I used basic lamp designs, but instead focused on getting the shots laid out, in the right order, and with the right basic timing that we are looking for. More detailed versions of the interior and the other lamps can hopefully just be inserted into this.

We'll discuss shortly!

Team Meeting Notes 2.0: What next?
We're in the Arctic now, so getting a package is really, really exciting.
Yesterday we split up into a Story Team and a Vis Dev Team, and resolved the basic storyline as a full group before our split. Here are some of the decisions we made, followed by some things we talked about doing for Thursday's meeting.
Decisions
- Setting: Tiny in the middle of the Arctic
- Home of a loner/hermit and "lamp lady," who needs a lot of light to get through the dark, sunless winter.
- The UPS truck arrives, plowing a path through the snow, and drops the package inside the house.
- We'll do the beginning with some 2D digital painting (which Kelsey is really excited to do) and animate the 3D top of the truck over it, with blowing snow in front. We might want a second 2D exterior shot for when the lamps are all turned on, and the house is ridiculously lit up through the windows.
Vis Dev: Stuff to design for Thursday
- Arctic landscape
- Hut exterior
- Delivery man character
- Delivery truck
- Hut interior
- Possibly our lamp lady herself, in case we'd like to stick 2D drawings of her in some shots.
- And of course, lots of lamps characters
Story Team
- Start drawing storyboards to visualize sections of the film.
- Resolve the end of the story. How does the clap on happen?
- If the old lady returns, we can differentiate between the delivery person and the lamp owner by their voices, without seeing the lady.
- Insert portraits in the scene of an old lady with lots of lamps so it's clear who we're looking for.
- While all the lamps are laughing, Octolamp spins around and thwacks another lamp on the back, and its bulbs burst with a clap clap sound.
- Or somebody whacks the radio, which turns on and a song that involves clapping plays
- An anxious lamp falls over with a thump-thump noise that triggers the clap lamp.
- There’s a clamp lamp that jumps off the table when laughing and snaps its jaws and then grabs the table again
- Anything else you brilliant people come up with.
See you guys tomorrow!

Team Meeting
Team Story
Yasmin
Katie
Blake - environment sketches too
Mark (Team Sound)
Team Visual Development
Michael
Kim
Kelsey
Elana - modeling environments
What do we do now?
Meet at beginning of class, update each other, and meet at end of class.
Things to think about: ex. Is this a lamp shop? What time period? What style are we doing (no straights, pixar, titmouse disney?)
Team Meeting Notes
Goals: short, not complicated short and learn how to work as a team, have focus
(freestyle notes)
Modern time, post-invention of clap lamps
Poland
Arctic - sun doesn't come up all winter, giant sun lamps
How do they get electricity?
House of lamp collector/hoarder
small cramped apartment in france - small room filled with weird lamp with old lady
old person or young person? - old person who wants to clap off the light before she gets in bed
any personality to human? sounds of foot steps affects (walking stick/walker)
night vs. day
Jeremy Vickery-lights, working on shadows

Team Meeting Notes
Goals: short, not complicated short and learn how to work as a team, have focus
- Clap on Lamp - unanimous
- more simple story
- less movement
- we should build up suspense before bursts out
- lamp exchanges glances (humanizes them)
- exploring characters with movement (variety)
- particle fx
- comedy
- big lamp with dim light (bully?)
- Kid Lamp
- simpler characters
- cut walking to door (fade to black)
- tips box over, doesn't jump
- how does parent put cord in? (different lamp type or veggie tales)
- dad is pole with base - mom is curvaceous
- kid = blend of parents
(freestyle notes)

A few characters for Clap On (first documented use of the working title?):
Octolamp (actually 6 lights, but Sexolamp is... odd.): I'm envisioning these arms to whirl around and basically dance and do tricks after all the others show how they light up. Animation tests to come.
And a few for the Kid Lamp one that we're not doing, but why not:

Hi guys, I drew like a billion lamps.
I'm trying to figure out what gives a base+shade+bulb a personality. Maybe they can help inspire our character development for our film.
Roundish lamps with some pointy bits. I also drew a few weird pottery shapes and forgot it had to include a lightbulb. Ha.
Getting a little silly, but I like the elongated basic lamps on the bottom. Also I was fond of the little modern guy with the three prongs, so I did another page of him.
Spiral lamps are pretty stylish and I picture them stumbling in circles.
I wanted to make a set of lamps for the one-upping sequence in our Clap Lamp idea, so I thought I'd start by setting it in a kid's room, in case that's a direction we like.
But it looks like we're going with an adult's room or a store, so here are a few more grownup lamps. Maybe the heads of the multi-headed lamps squabble with each other.
This guy looks a little more evil in black Sharpie with those spikes. Also very Mouse Guard. But he could be a cute little guy without the spikes, or with some friendlier shaped geometric things. Emphasize the big head and stuck out chest.
Ok, happy designing and storyboarding!

Storyboard Idea 1
Based off of Matt's comic. Inspiration for little lamp: Lucky from 101 Dalmations
(there is no speech in these storyboards-- phrases in " " are implied by body movements)
Lamp and parents watching tv
oh wow!
turns head towards parents
rushes over, looks up "can i have it?" look
pan down, zoom in on little lamp
parents go "hmmm..."
lamp wagging cord (like tail - a puppy waiting for a treat)
well...
ok!
Doorbell Ring sound FX, little lamp rushes excitedly to door while dad lamp slowly lumbers towards it
Door open and close SFX, box dropped on ground SFX and Dust FX
peeks inside
falls in
out bounces the ball
lamp jumps out of box and lands on ball, causing it to roll out
chasing ball
the fall
Comments:
- funny story but too long for first attempt
- many lots of extension cords, funnier, and when he falls extension cord falls out-- he "dies", then dad plugs him back in and he's hyper and bouncing all over the place again.

one of Kelsey's lamp sketches in Maya
There is a point light in the lightbulb, a spotlight pretending to be the light bulb and a directional light lighting the lamp from outside. Added fog on the spotlight to give the light some body. I used curves to loft the lampshade. The green circle is an animation controller. It can walk! Well, sort of... it actually waddles more than anything, but it can waddle!
Start of lamp storyboard.
